Cat Power

I’m going kick off these music reviews with my all-time favorite female musician, Chan Marshall A.K.A. Cat Power.  If I could choose to sing like anyone, it would be her.  Her voice is like molasses…warm and raspy, and full of real emotion.  She’s a brilliant singer-songwriter who also plays a mean guitar and piano.  Her past albums include folksy-country tinged ballads paired with angst-ridden punk.  But overall, her sound is intimate and bittersweet.

On her latest album, The Greatest, which is not a “greatest hits” album, she’s recruited  top Memphis musicians including Al Green’s guitarist and writing partner Mabon “Teenie” Hodges to help her create a sultry, soulful album with horns and smooth backing vocals.   Check out her recent performance of the title track, “The Greatest” on the Austin City Limits program.  She’s mesmerizing.
